Sitting Bull ( Ta-ton-ka-I-yo-ton-ka )

The buffalo seated in the upper right-hand corner identifies the artist. Sitting Bull is depicted on the horse. The long black object hanging from his hand represents the scalp of the dead Crow Indian lying at left. Using his spear, he is about to kill the second Crow, who misses shooting him and loses his rifle. Native Americans of the Plains used these drawings both to record actual events and to illustrate a warrior's qualities of bravery and prowess.
