Stoney in Canada The Assiniboine called themselves U Sin or U Pwawa ( Ones which cook with hot stones ) |
| The
Assiniboine are people of the northern Great Plains of
North America who call themselves Nakoda or Nakota. It is
believed that the Assiniboine were originally Sioux, but
split in the 17th Century. The Assiniboine started off life in the land of cold and snow. The children were chilled and food was hard to find. The people knew they had to move to find a warmer living ground where life would have less problems. To the Chippewa, they are known as AS'see'nee pai-tue (those who cook with stones). In Canada they are called the Stoney, while in the United States they are known as the Assiniboine. Through years of separation, differences in dialect have developed between the two branches. But they still remember their common origins. |
