The Crow were and are the
proudest of Indians, and they rarely allied themselves
with other tribes for the purpose of defense. They were
virtually surrounded by hostile tribes with a common
hatred against this tribe.
The Crow called themselves the Absaroke, or bird people.
They ranged chiefly in the area of the Yellowstone River.
The Crow consisted of two bands, the dominant one being
the Many Lodges, the so called Mountain
Crow.
And the 'Binesupede' usually known as the River
Crow.
Their only crop was tobacco, which they used for pleasure
and religious purposes.
Until the 18th century the Crow lived with the Hidatsa on
the upper Missouri River. After a dispute they migrated
westward until they reached the Rocky Mountains.
The Crow developed a complex social system.
They were enemies of the Sioux and helped the whites in
the Sioux wars.
