The
Plains Indians are usually divided into two broad
classifications. Tribal names reflected an
astounding diversity of people.
The first group were fully nomadic, following the
vast herds of buffalo. They were nomadic hunters
of amazing horsemanship. These people were not
growers of food.

Plains-Cree.
Blackfoot.
Gros Ventre.
Assiniboine.
Plains-Ojibwa.
Crow.
Lakota ( Teton Sioux ).
Cheyenne.
Arapaho.
Kiowa.
Comanche.
Lipan-Apache.
Kiowa-Apache.
Sarsi.
Tonkawa.
Nez Perce ( Plateau ).
Flathead ( Plateau ).
Shoshone ( Great Basin ).
The second group of Plains Indians, the
semi-sedentary tribes, in addition to hunting
buffalo, lived in villages and raised crops.
Hidatsa.
Mandan.
Arikara.
Ponca.
Omaha.
Iowa.
Oto.
Pawnee.
Kitsai.
Kaw ( of Kansa ).
Osage.
Wichita.
The plains were the grounds of horse
mounted warriors.
The Plains Indian who literally lived his life on
a horse. All the Plains tribes together had
hardly more than three hundred thousand people.
