Symbols of animals, or the spirit world can be painted from shields in order to offer their owners spiritual protection both in war and in their daily lives. They can be crafted onto shields.

Thunderbirds or related symbols such as hailstones, lightning or the crescent moon, and Bears, Buffalo, Watermonsters, and other kinds of powerful animals were also powerfully symbols.
Most symbols and designs represent specific ideas or cultural expressions.

Not every tribe used these same examples. Tribes used their own colors for designs and symbols depending on their location and availability of various plants and minerals used to make paints.
As deeply spiritual people and highly evolved society, they communicated their thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through symbols.
