The meaning of the shield:
The shield portrays Chief Hump and the Miniconjou
Sioux defeating a traditional enemy, the Crow. In
war, Chief Hump carried only a coup stick and a
personal medicineshield.
This shield is a classic example of pictographic
Lakota art.
