The meaning of the shield:
The singular Thunderbird was said
to reside on the top of a mountain, and was the
servant of the Great Spirit.
The Thunderbird only flew about to carry messages
from one spirit to another.

The owner of the shield:
Rotten Tail ( not to be confused with the more
famous chief Rotten Belly who was killed in the
battle with the Blackfoot, August 1834 ).
Rotten Tail is the leader of the River Crow band
during the 1840s and head chief of the Crow Tribe
during the 1850's and 1860's. He was an
outstanding medicine man and war party commander
( pipe carrier ).
On the picture he carries a shield decorated with
the symbol of a Thunderbird.
